Celebrating a Modernism Week milestone

A group of people tour a modern home in Palm Springs

Modernism Week, the annual celebration of midcentury Modern design, architecture, and culture in Palm Springs, California, marks its twentieth anniversary in 2025. Turkel Design was proud to be a sponsor of the February festivities, and to connect with the community throughout the week. Cofounding partners Joel and Meelena Turkel welcomed dozens of architects, designers, and Modernism fans to events at Desert House, their Palm Springs home.

On Saturday, February 15, a sold-out crowd attended This Century Modern, a special talk and tour of Desert House that focused on the connection between the traditions of Modernism and the innovative systems-built architecture practiced by Turkel Design today.

Marvin Windows and Doors, whose lift-and-slide glass doors contribute to the sense of indoor/outdoor living at Desert House and many other Turkel Design homes, hosted a reception for a group of architects and builders on Thursday, February 20. USModernist, an organization dedicated to the documentation and preservation of Modernist residential architecture, also included a tour of the home as part of its connoisseurs’ trip to Palm Springs during Modernism Week.

The Turkels designed Desert House as both their family home and a “Living Lab” for their architecture practice, a place to test new materials, strategies, and systems. Upon its completion in 2019, it received attention and acclaim as a Modernism Week Featured Home. “We always look forward to the opportunity to connect with those who appreciate innovation in Modern architecture,” says Meelena Turkel. “We’re proud that our home continues to be a source of joy and inspiration for this community.”
