The value of a home transcends its monetary worth. It is the place where we spend time with the people we care about the most—where our most cherished memories are made. Because how we spend that time is shaped by the spaces in which we live, a benefit of a custom home is the ability to intentionally create the setting for these connections. We often hear from past clients—especially around the holidays—about how happy they are to be able to host loved ones in their Turkel Design home.
Bringing the generations together
“Everybody who comes here is amazed,” says the owner of a home in New Hampshire’s White Mountains, a site of frequent celebrations with children and grandchildren. “When you wake up to this view, it’s hard to pull yourself away. We think about how much we love it every day.”
Design that inspires that kind of joy is the result of a highly customized, interactive process. We work with each client to understand how they and their loved ones want to live. Then we use that understanding to create a home that makes it possible.
For clients with grown children who live elsewhere, a home that feels appropriately sized for two but flexible enough to welcome visiting family is particularly important. This thoughtful use of space is a key design principle for our practice. It is evident in homes such as Mulmur Hills Farm, whose owner spoke with us about how the design allows him and his wife to create precious memories when their grown children and grandchildren come to visit.

“We gave Turkel Design the parameters around how we wanted to live,” he says. “We really wanted an open kitchen with a very large island, as my wife’s dream was to have our two sons-in-law, who are expert chefs, preparing dinner with her. We call that island the control center, because when you’re within it, you have complete control over your kitchen domain, plus you’re looking at the large living room and the breakfast nook and out through the eastern window as you’re preparing great meals for the whole family.”

The youngest members of the family continue to find inspiration in the design of Mulmur Hills Farm, in spaces as varied as a library (“It’s so cozy. Our little granddaughters love being in there because of the scale of the room.”) and in the cantilevered studio on the second level, which is designed for the owners’ twin passions of yoga and painting.

“A unique detail in that space is the horizontal glass window underneath the yoga stage,” says the homeowner. “Usually my wife is doing yoga on the stage, and I’m practicing on the floor. I’ve got this beautiful view out of that window, looking to the pond and beyond. And when the grandchildren are upstairs with us, they absolutely love to hang out with us, looking through that window. It’s very cute.”
The architecture of this home brings the generations together, setting the stage for experiences that become invaluable memories. “These were the rooms that we needed for our lifestyle,” says the owner of Mulmur Hills Farm. “Turkel Design listened to and organized our thoughts and created beautiful spaces for each one of our needs.”
