Berkshire Glade
Great Barrington, Massachusetts
Natural light is never quite the same from one moment to the next, changing subtly from morning to evening and from one season to another. At Berkshire Glade, those shifts become part of the experience of the house, continually altering its character. Lightwells draw this ever-changing daylight deep into the home, while generous expanses of glass bring the landscape indoors, connecting the rhythms of nature to everyday life.
Designed as both a multigenerational vacation home and a future full-time residence for a couple whose careers span New York City and Boston, Berkshire Glade is shaped around the landscape and the life of the family. Two distinct forms—a primary residence and a guest house—are joined by a covered porch, creating a natural balance between gathering and privacy and allowing the home to accommodate the family as it grows and changes.
At the heart of the main house is the great room, a warm, communal space oriented to the landscape. Large expanses of glass open the room to the outdoors, while smaller spaces along its edges enrich the experience and offer places to settle in. A breakfast nook projects into the landscape, catching the morning light and making an especially lovely place to linger over a warm cup. Opposite the main seating area, a glazed alcove beside the wood stove holds a daybed, a cozy retreat within the larger room.
The two volumes of the home are joined by a covered porch anchored by a fireplace. Open to the landscape, it brings the family together while preserving the privacy of each residence, creating a gracious place to gather throughout the seasons.
