Getting to the point

Inside Turkel Design’s industry-leading strategy for precision in home architecture

There is an undeniable thrill to the prospect of creating your own custom home that captures the beauty of the land on which it is built?a home designed specifically for you and your site. The anticipation for the new, however, is best when accompanied by confidence. A proven system that reduces risk, delivers inspired design, and is constantly setting a new standard for quality can inspire that confidence.

Dans un recent post, we described how on-site 3D scanning improves our processus de signature by feeding point cloud data into our Building Information Model?the road map by which we collaborate with consultants and local contractors to ensure the accurate assembly of every Turkel Design home.

In the months since, our team has continued to refine the strategy for using point cloud technology to improve accuracy, precision, and visualization of each home. We have developed a unique system for using LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) scans, in which lasers measure the distance between a point on the land and the satellite from which they are launched. Because each point contains X, Y, and Z coordinates, the resulting dataset is a 3D point cloud that creates an accurate digital twin of the landscape.

?We?ve worked with architects before, and we?ve never felt this confident about the quality of the design, this early in the process,? says one homeowner. ?Being able to experience this level of detail has only made us more enthusiastic about our new home. We can?t wait to move in.?

Many scans are better than one

At Turkel Design, we don?t simply scan a building site once. We leverage a combination of different types of LiDAR scans (terrestrial, drone) from a range of sources to develop the most complete and accurate picture of your site. This unique amalgamation of data sets imports directly into our design software, generating tangible benefits for you as the homeowner.

The resulting images show you how your home will look positioned on its land and how the landscape views will appear from the interior spaces. You are able to see yourself in your home much earlier in the design process?and trust that what you see is what you will get.

As we guide homeowners through their local permitting and review processes, point cloud data is a robust tool to help win approval. It helps us communicate with stakeholders in a sophisticated, highly transparent way, so that everyone feels confident about the project, particularly in communities with strict regulations.

Up in the cloud

These visualization tools extend beyond still photos. We use point cloud data to provide an interactive experience of your site. For example, in a Utah town known for world-class skiing, we were able to represent not just the distance from the position of a client?s yet-to-be-built ski-in ski-out home to a nearby ski slope, but the feeling of skiing sixty feet down the slope itself. Exploring the landscape via point cloud ?really helped me understand how I wanted the home to be positioned on the site,? says the client.

Our innovative and continually evolving approach to using point cloud technology delivers an unmatched level of clarity and predictability.

The benefits are wide-ranging, and include:

  • Detailed visualization of design decisions early in the process
  • Precise siting of the home on the land to take advantage of views and account for existing landscape features
  • An accurate set of measurements for consultants and builders
  • A robust collection of visual assets to use in the permitting process

The overall result is that we fulfill our mission better than ever: elegant architecture, assembled with precision, designed for your lifestyle, wherever you want to live.

If you are thinking of embarking on the thrill of possibility that comes with a custom home, Turkel Design?s unique systematized process lets you do it with confidence.
