?The land is the simplest form of architecture,? wrote Frank Lloyd Wright in An Organic Architecture. The connection between a building?s design and the nature that surrounds it is essential to Modern architecture, and one of the principles that shapes every Turkel Design home.
Whatever the location, our team will design a beautiful home that connects its occupants to nature. In some cases, the land offers truly exceptional levels of inspiration: for example, the three acres just outside of Aspen, Colorado, that comprise the site of Aspen Valley Home.
When the homeowners approached us to design a modern mountain home for this pristine property, framed by views of the National Forest and overlooking the Roaring Fork River, respect for the landscape was of primary importance.

Working together with nature
?It wasn’t really about having a home that was placed on the property,? says homeowner Bob Bridger. ?It was more about having it coexist and be within nature rather than be of the house. So, the aspiration was, ?How can we create something that is respectful of the place and adds to it rather than something that takes away from it??”
Bridger says he was drawn to Turkel Design in part because assembling a prefabricated home has less of an impact on the land itself than traditional construction. Intrigued by our proceso, Bridger viewed other Casas de diseño Turkel and recognized the design principles he sought for the Aspen home. ?The idea of how the Turkel Design approach addresses circulation space is really impressive because each square foot is so painstakingly considered,? he says. ?The thing that people come to find when they visit the home is it feels bigger than it is because you have no unused space.?
Each room in Aspen Valley Home feels special in part because every space is connected to nature?the home fully embraces the principle of indoor-outdoor living. Inspired by the exceptional beauty of the site, our team designed each room to frame its own breathtaking view?or multiple views. The double-height great room is enclosed with glass walls on three sides, ensuring that none of the natural beauty is obscured. ?You can sit and experience the ridge line from all 270 degrees,? says Bridger.

Proximity to nature is key to the experience of living in the home. The primary suite is located on the main level, with direct access to a pool and patio steps away from the sliding glass doors. When the homeowners awaken and raise the automated window shades, they?re greeted with the epic quality of the location: mountains, fir trees, fresh water, even the occasional moose or fox.

On the upper level, the vastness of the site truly comes into focus. It?s hard to imagine a more inspiring vantage point from which to work than the loft office.

Design for better living
The design?s integration with nature results in a home that is not only beautiful but also a pleasure to inhabit: the calming mountain views, flow of fresh air, and influx of natural light contribute to the occupants? well-being. ?We have a lot of fresh air that moves through our house pretty much year-round,? says Bridger. ?Even in the winter we have windows open because we get so much solar gain from the amount of glass and the reflection off the snow.?
The daily transitions from dawn to daylight to dusk create a sense of transformation in the interior spaces. ?As [guests] flow through the space, there’s this endless series of discoveries,? says Bridger. ?When people leave, they want to come back.?
