Merriment in the Mountains
A modern mountain compound in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Thunder Road Reaches provided our architects with endless inspiration to design for fun and socialization. Comprising three structures—a main house, a guesthouse/ADU, and a soaring gear barn—its scale feels appropriate for everything from cozy weekend getaways to lively parties full of family and friends.
Above, the glass-and-steel gear barn is designed for flexibility. Revelers can play table games while onlookers relax with drinks by the fire—the triple-pane windows afford a view of the snowy environs while ensuring that the cold stays outside. The gear barn’s proportions are generous enough so that the party can coexist with display and storage for the owners’ hobbies, from a classic car collection to equipment for the premier fly-fishing of nearby Snake River.
At the main house, a game room/media room is equipped with a bar and plenty of seating to play cards and board games, or to watch the game on TV. Balancing openness and privacy, the room opens out to a patio surrounded by the stunning mountains and forests of Jackson Hole. Imagine recreating your favorite neighborhood hangout in one of the country’s most beautiful natural environments.
For some, there’s no better place to unwind than in a dark, quiet room with a big screen and an enviable DVD collection. The den above fulfills those needs and is outfitted with plenty of custom cabinetry for physical-media enthusiasts. As part of a primary suite that is the sole occupant of the home’s upper level, this room serves as a relaxing respite.
